1652 Red Fig Ficus Plein Air Alla Prima
Very windy day today, I had to hang on to my hat and sometimes the easel. Those are whitecaps in the inlet, it was that color, a beautiful teal blue. This is out at the causeway park, I was going to do one of the historic buildings there but the water was so pretty I wanted to paint there. I have been doing some paintings at home and left my favorite knife there. So I had to use a big one I had along, it has a 3 inch long blade with a rounded tip. It worked well for making the big leaves of tree.
The tree is some kind of ficus, has pretty bright red figs. I tried one one time and it wasn't sweet.
Its 8 x 10 inches, oil on masonite $300.

1646 Boston Ave. Back Yard, Plein Air Alla Prima
This is a little shed in the back yard, the owner let us come paint today, we had lots of fun. I was attracted to the sunshine coming through the banana leaf stalks, it was glowing bright red. There is Queen's Wreath growing on the shed, its a lovely vine that looks a little like wisteria if you don't look too close!
Perfect day, nice breeze and shady, we kept looking at the sky, there were some storm clouds but they blew over without raining on us. I am surprised I came up with a painting, a big storm came through around 4 am, woke me up, winds and rain. I was worried we would be rained out and had trouble going back to sleep and then waking up again!
The painting is 8 x 10 inches, oil on masonite lots of thick, juicy texture.

1636 Sea Grapes Aglow Plein Air Alla Prima
I did this yesterday at the jetty park, it is 5 x 7 inches in
acrylic on canvas mounted on masonite. Mostly painted with the painting knife. These are the same paints as yesterday's. I liked how they handled on the canvas better than on the plain masonite. But I like oils the best. I loved how the sea grape leaves had the sun shining through them like stained glass windows.

1635 Coconut Palm at the Jetties plein air, alla prima
I did this today at the jetty park, it is 5 x 7 inches in
acrylic on masonite. Mostly painted with the painting knife. They are Golden Open
acrylics, I got them from the company to try them out. I liked them a
lot, very bright colors. These are just the three primary colors and
white. These acrylics stay wet longer, in today's conditions regular
acrylics would have dried very fast. Normally I paint in oils but this
was a fun change.

1631 Bamboo at the Richard E. Becker Preserve Plein Air
Last week I saw this grove of bamboo, this is just a small corner. I wanted to paint it so yesterday I did. Much better weather yesterday, not too hot and some blue skies. I had a lot of trouble picking the view to paint, there are about 10 other nice views in the same place! I just need to turn a little ways and there is a possible painting.
Interesting facts about bamboo, its the tallest grass on earth and fastest growing plant in the world.
Bamboo can be used as a building material and young shoots are edible. Bamboo is more difficult to compress than brick, wood or concrete. It is harder to pull apart than steel. It rots a lot slower than many other woods. I have read that it is about 35% more efficient at converting carbon dioxide into oxygen than most other trees. I think we should grow more bamboo!
I heard its invasive. Maybe if the conditions are just right. My dad planted two clumps of bamboo some 50 years ago. I was a small child. There are still two clumps, there are more stalks but its hardly taking over.

I did this one yesterday at Heathcote, it was a really nice day, started out gray and turned sunny. The arbor is at the entrance of their rain forest, this is looking at the way out to the palm garden. I am very fond of crinum lilies, they have this amazing fragrance that makes me think of home whenever I smell it. My mother used to grow them and I have a few the yard.
