1809 Palm Island, Plein air

Did this one out at the Savannas Recreational area on Thursday.

This was out at Palm Island, they have a huge pavilion there than they let us use. It was pretty hot at first but we finally started getting some clouds and a little breeze. I heard some alligators and saw and heard lots of birds. The egret was there and he was watching the bird in the background. It is lovely and peaceful out there, I hated to come home!

It's 12 x 16, oil on masonite. $300.

1805 Secret Pond in the Woods plein air alla prima

I painted this out at the little pond at George LeStrange preserve. Lots of fun painting with everyone, started out like it looks here and then at 11:30 the skies opened up, thunder and lightening. Luckily there is a little shelter so we stayed pretty dry. When it eased up we went back to the car, I was walking faster than I have in years! Was scared of the lightening.

8 x 10, oil on masonite.

This is at the old Fort Park on Indian River Drive. Beautiful skies, and lots of birds! Saw the ibises, snowy egret, osprey, gulls and little blue heron. That little cut of water is fresh water, flowing into the salt water estuary there. The birds like to come and take baths and drink from it.

The painting is 11 x 14, oil on masonite.

1788 In Full Bloom Mixed Media oil and water color painting

First painting after my cataract surgery, I was having fun with colors! I tried a new to me technique. I took a piece of watercolor paper, coated it with clear acrylic. This was to protect the paper from the oil paints. Then painted an under painting with watercolors. Then went over that with oils. It was about 5 sessions with letting it dry in between times and tweaks. Its a fun technique, something a little different.  Its loosely based on a photo I took while I was at a Heathcote Botanical Gardens plant sale.

Its 9 x 11 inches, watercolor and oil on watercolor paper.

1781 Tugboat on the Causeway, plein aire

Exciting day painting yesterday, about 200 feet from where we were painting an electric pole started arcing with the super bright light, then it blew up, arced some more and blew up again. Very very loud! The fire truck came and put out the underbrush which had started to burn up.  Its 8 x 10 inches, oil on masonite.

1776 Three Potted Palms Plein Air Alla Prima

I painted this today at Heathcote Botanical gardens, had a lot of fun.  They are three different kinds of palms, the one in the back is an old man palm, the trunk is covered with brown whiskers.  Its too far away to show in my painting but it was very interesting to see in real life.

They are putting up the Christmas lights and we had a bit of a preview.  It looks like its going to be a wonderful show this year.

1774 Wafting White Water Lily

This started out badly, I was trying a different technique, negative painting with water soluble oil paints. So it was sort of new to me, I have done negative painting before but not trying to do a whole painting just parts of them. Negative painting is working from front to back, it messes with your mind in a fun but sometimes frustrating way. So foreground things are painted first and the background is painted around them. Then in the end up it turned into more of one of my normal paintings. There is the final painting and a wip below. Right before the end the painting was taken to the sink and washed off, something I hadn't done with water soluble oils. I wasn't sure if the whole thing would come off or not. It stayed and I decided I didn't like the plants on the right so rubbed them out. Click them to see bigger. Painting is 9 x 12 inches, oil on canvas mounted on masonite.
