I painted this today at Heathcote Botanical gardens, had a lot of fun. They are three different kinds of palms, the one in the back is an old man palm, the trunk is covered with brown whiskers. Its too far away to show in my painting but it was very interesting to see in real life.
They are putting up the Christmas lights and we had a bit of a preview. It looks like its going to be a wonderful show this year.

1774 Wafting White Water Lily
This started out badly, I was trying a different technique, negative
painting with water soluble oil paints. So it was sort of new to me, I
have done negative painting before but not trying to do a whole painting
just parts of them. Negative painting is working from front to back, it
messes with your mind in a fun but sometimes frustrating way. So
foreground things are painted first and the background is painted around
them. Then in the end up it turned into more of one of my
normal paintings. There is the final painting and a wip below. Right before
the end the painting was taken to the sink and washed off, something I
hadn't done with water soluble oils. I wasn't sure if the whole thing
would come off or not. It stayed and I decided I didn't like the plants
on the right so rubbed them out. Click them to see bigger. Painting is 9
x 12 inches, oil on canvas mounted on masonite.

1750 Down by the River Plein air alla Prima
It was really hard prying myself out of bed today, it was cold for here, 50 degrees. I was glad I went out, its been a beautiful day! This was at the Old Fort Park site here in Fort Pierce, looking down towards the river. I was in a nice sunny spot and got warmed up fast.
I was close to the road and some of the drivers slowed down to look. One stopped and yelled out that the painting was beautiful! The painting was at the stage of palm tree trunks with no leaves so I am not sure what he was seeing.

1742 Family Reunion Plein air
I painted this one a few weeks ago out at the Inlet State Park. I was tired and not too happy with the way it looked so I let it sit for awhile.
About a week ago I tweaked it a little and still wasn't happy. Today I picked it up and I think its finally finished! Originally it was very even, palms were very much alike, same colors in them, foreground and background boring. I fixed up the sea grapes under the palms and added the one in the left background. I added the trail and made some of the palms come forward and some go into the back. Some are thinner and some thicker. It made me think of families, how in most families there are differences and similarities in how they look. That is how I came up with the title.

1740 Outback in Indrio Savannas Plein air alla prima
I have been wanting to paint this scene for some years now, its a big hike for me. I figured if I was going to do it, it better be now before I get much more creaky. You walk down the main trail and then take the second left over a little bridge and walk about 10 more miles...well its only about half a mile all together, there and back.
Beautiful day, lots of fish jumping around and I heard a lot of gators grunting. A couple of hikers said they saw five snakes today and a bunch of scrub jays, I didn't see any snakes but I saw a couple of jays.

1737 Alligator Morning Plein Air Alla Prima
I had lots of fun painting this on Thursday, just now posting it! It was a beautiful morning, lots of nice, puffy clouds. When I got up in the morning I thought it would be just blue skies because it was very foggy. But by the time I got out to the paintout site it looked like this. Not too hot or cold, just right. This was painted at the Savannas Recreational area, one of my favorite places to paint. All my troubles melt away its so peaceful there.
Saw lots of little alligators and saw lots of birds. Heard the birds and gators too, the mother or father alligator must have been pretty close. It sounded like it was coming from across the water behind the golden reeds. If you look closely you can see a moorhen, alligator and grackle.
Oh, tomorrow, FEB 10 10 to 3 is the Treasure Coast Party in the Park, at the Inlet State Park on north beach. I am going to be there and have some of my paintings there too. Free admission! There are lots of other things going on too, scroll down, you can read more about it.
