Daily Painting 1368 Pepper Park Lane Plein Air Alla Prima

I did this at Pepper Park here in Fort Pierce. I took some artistic liberties, made the asphalt into a dirt road. Other than that its pretty close to what is there. If you look into the distance you can see you can take a left, that will lead you out of the park and if you take a right you get to where you can go walk on some nice docks. Its 8 x 10 inches, oil on masonite. $200.

I did this one last week, loosely based on a photo I had taken at Pepper Park. I "grew" the palm tree up a bit and removed some bushes that were in the way of the ocean. The rest is as it was, the sea grapes are beautifully colored right now. The painting is 8 x 10 inches, oil on masonite. $200.

I did this one at the open studio at Art Mundo last night, it was lots of fun painting with everyone. I worked from a photo I took from one of the boardwalks at Pepper Park on Tuesday. I loved all the colors, the seagrapes look so pretty now. The paint is nice and thick on this one, I enjoyed piling it on. The painting is 5 x 7 inches, oil on masonite. $100.

I painted this today at Pepper Park. This is on the Indian River side of the park. I started walking around on the ocean side, it was beautiful and I saw a lot of nice scenes to paint but it was very bright out with no shade where I would have to be.
I did some editing of the scene, in real life there is a dark black asphalt drive where the sandy trail is. I also left out the trash can and dock. The sea grapes are gorgeous right now, bright red and orange, each leaf is a work of art if you zoom your sight in. It feels so much like fall now, our hickory trees are golden and there are red Virginia creeper vines all over.

I painted this today at Heathcote Botanical Gardens here in Fort Pierce. I have painted this palm before, it has grown a lot taller since I have been painting it. The fronds have changed colors too, when it was young they were a silvery gray. I took some liberties with the background, there are some white walls I didn't care for so I got rid of them. The painting is 8 x 10 inches, oil on masonite. No brush used at all, its all the pallet knife and some blending with my fingers.

Perfect day today, the main difficulty I had was there is so much to choose from to paint! Those are impatiens in the flower pot and some kind of begonia with huge leaves next to it. In the back is the bauhinia orchid tree which is in bloom too. The bright pink plant is a dracaena.

They asked me to come paint today at the museum, I brought some panels and frames, frames were to the right of me out of the picture, I had done two other paintings they are in the top corner. This lady comes up and asks me what my "craft" is. I told her I paint. She said she thought I was a framer. Now I had the paint on my knife, etc. etc. ??

I tweaked this one a bit, its one I did awhile ago.
Rain Lilies or zephyranthes. Zephyranthes means “flower of the south wind” the definition of zephyr means "mild wind" and zephuros in ancient Greek means “west wind.” Another name is fairy lilies. They are a very nice little plant, they bloom right after it rains and in my yard need little care. These plants can be planted in Florida as low ground covers, they make fine borders and need no care. The painting is 5 x 7 inches, oil

SOLD This was almost a plein air painting, its been stormy lately, 25-40 mph winds and tons of rain. I thought I would see what I could do in between rain showers so I went out and started and then it started pouring. I came back inside and looked out the window and worked on the painting that way. About half way through the painting the wind totally stopped, a nice rainbow came out and my light changed again. I didn't try to catch that and stuck with the way the painting started. I had no idea what to paint so I thinned my paints way down and made the background, letting the oil paints flow like water colors. I looked at the result and I could see the trees so I removed some paint and added more and started having fun.

I think they look a lot like gumbo limbo or tourist trees. This wasn't planned it just happened that way. Do you know why the gumbo limbo is also called the tourist tree?

SOLD Finished this oil painting today 18.50 x 22 inches on masonite, I have been working and waiting for days on it. I let the different layers dry on big or complicated paintings so if I mess up I don't have to fix too much. I was glad I had, I was resting my little finger on the painting to steady my hand and got it into the wet wing. Then it got into the sky. I was able to clean it up without messing up my sky because I let it dry.
It is from a park near where I live, its the Fort Pierce inlet to the ocean in the background. The inlet gets a strong current between the jetties. The rocks across the inlet in the back are just a row of big rocks and the ones in the front are paved so you can walk easy on them and go fishing. There is a fish cleaning station in front of the pelicans, they get scraps so there is lots of activity there. Free shipping.

I just got into a discussion with my husband over the bird. I started to name the painting "White Bird by the Indian River." He asked what kind of bird is it and I told him its an American egret. He said I should name the painting with American egret instead of white bird.

Then he asked me if I am sure its the American egret and not the white heron. I told him I was pretty sure that is what it is, the heron has the long feathers on its head and yellow colored legs and lives South of us. Its getting really hard for me to name paintings for some reason. The painting is oil on plywood, 8 x 10 inches.

SOLD Actually I am relieved the painting is finished! I painted it and thought it was done. Hubby points out her one eye and claw aren't reading well so I get out my paints and tiny brush and poke and prod at it for awhile, seeing other things that need fixing too. So I get the camera out and then look at my photo of the painting and see some other stuff wrong, get out the brush and paints, made sure it was signed.

Painting this crab brought back some memories, when I was around 12 we went across the river to Little Mud Creek. We had some chicken parts and some nets, we would throw the parts into the river and the crabs would come to eat and we could net them up. My mother would cook them and we had them for dinner. Very sweet tasting.

I could have sworn I posted this one already, I was looking through my file and found it. I did it at the Art Bank on some of their open studio nights. I did the background first , let it dry, and then come back and see what I see in it. If I am lucky the fish hint that they are there and I just have to paint them the rest of the way in. They are fantasy fish, out of my head, the big ones look a bit like snook, haven't had any of that in years, snook are one of my favorite fish to eat. Maybe a bit of wishful thinking on my part.

Things have been hectic lately, had out of town company three times, the air conditioner died, it got fixed thank goodness. And of course the Fourth of July. So I haven't been painting much. I had a time with this one, I started it at the art bank. (they have an open studio on Wednesday nights) I had the background in and my studio partner said she saw a fish in it. I took a look and sure enough, I saw him too. So I started painting him in today, after turning the painting upside down so the sea fan would be growing in the right direction. (click the painting, you can see the texture of the fan better then.)

I started with a lion fish. Well, he didn't look good and there was a bunch of commotion going on in the house so I was distracted and I removed him. I put in the eye of the fish, it looked kind of like an eye there already and then the rest of the fish got painted with no more trouble.

These are on the North Fork of the Saint Lucie river, I haven't seen them very often there so I was thrilled to get to see them this time.
