Daily Painting 336 Sick doggy

Well, its a digital painting today! Our dog Whisker got into big trouble, he ate something poisonous, a bufo toad or something else. We took him for a walk this morning, and a little while after we came back he started foaming at the mouth and looking very sad. Incredible amounts of foam, I never saw anything like it. Then his hind legs started to get shaky so we took him to the vet's. He had a fever of 106, (dogs are supposed to be 101) The vet said he was close to convulsions and they could cause brain damage. The doctor gave him some valium and did a bunch of other stuff. After a few hours we visited him and he was feeling much better, he recognized us and was standing up. Not too steady but at least he was up. The vet thinks he will be fine.

LORI & JACK McNAMARA

THEIR HOME: A 2-bedroom, 11/2-bath home built by Lori's parents in 1950.

Except for 13 years during her first marriage, Lori McNamara has lived her entire life in this small, low-slung house on the river. A painter and head of the Plein Air painters of the Treasure Coast, the river and Indian River Drive are Lori's constant subjects.

"It changes minute to minute," she said. "That's what's great about living on the river."

Lori is a member of a group of artists called "daily painters." She is nearing the end of a project where she finishes a painting a day for a year, which are then posted on her Web site. Most are scenes on or near the river she loves.

One of her recent subjects is a clump of blooming red bromeliads that locals call "hurricane flowers."

"The legend is that they only bloom in hurricane years," she said .

During the Treasure Coast storms of 2004, the McNamaras lost 10 feet of river bank and several large hickory trees. In exchange, they discovered new species of birds and plants blown in from other places.

"For a while, we had a family of Cooper's hawks, who cleaned up all the songbirds and squirrels, but they're gone now, so the squirrels are coming back," Lori said.

After trips, the McNamaras look forward to the moment when they make the turn in downtown Fort Pierce and head south on The Drive.

"Coming home from vacation you can smell the salt air and it feels like home," she said.

Daily Painting 327 Playing Catch-up,

I wanted to tweak these two paintings a bit more, the night blooming cereus was from daily painting 253, back in June. I added some color to the petals and stamens. The royal poinciana below is from January, daily painting 118. I added some palm fronds to the palms and some more grass under them. I added a few details to the far away palms across the river, they were too even in tone. The cereus painting is 5 x 7 and

Daily Painting 308 Golden Glade

Its oil, 11 x 14, $300. Below is a photo of most of our pineapple crop, we have four more that are almost ripe. We learned something about pineapples today, ours are full of small rock hard brown seeds! According to some stories on the internet, if humming birds fertilize the pineapple flowers, the fruit will develop seeds. Humming birds aren't allowed in Hawaii for that reason. I made juice from my fruits so they didn't go to waste. It sure is tough getting pineapples around here, usually the opossums or raccoons get them first.
